What is Tracheostomy?

Tracheostomy is a procedure that creates an opening in the neck, to allow direct access to the trachea (windpipe) for medical treatment and interventions including suctioning, ventilation, and oxygen support.

It may be required when a person has difficulty breathing through their nose and mouth due to respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or sleep apnea.

Difficulties Faced by Patients with Tracheostomy:

Patients with tracheostomy face a range of difficulties with their condition. These include physical challenges such as difficulty controlling salivation or having difficulty speaking, eating and drinking. They can also often have increased susceptibility to infection due to the presence of the stoma which increases their risk of aspiration pneumonia. The risk of skin breakdown around the trach site is also a concern.

Furthermore, there are psychological difficulties associated with this condition as well, such as feeling anxious about having to wear certain protective devices, being embarrassed or self-conscious about their appearance, or feeling isolated from others due to limited access to peer groups or activities that involve water.

Kinsa Care Approach To Tracheostomy:

At Kinsa Care we understand how difficult it can be for patients who require a tracheostomy.

Our approach ensures that our clients receive comprehensive care and support throughout their journey. We provide tailored education about tracheostomy management for each individual patient so they understand what is happening and why it is important for them to adhere to recommended treatment plans. We work closely with our client’s families and other healthcare professionals involved in their care to ensure everyone understands what is needed for optimal outcomes. Furthermore, we also provide emotional support through counselling services if required as well as psychosocial rehabilitation programmes designed specifically for those living with tracheostomies.

Our aim at Kinsa Care is always patient-centred care so we always take into consideration the personal goals and needs of each individual before recommending any course of action.
