What is Multiple System Atrophy?
Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a rare, degenerative neurological disorder that affects multiple systems in the body.
It is a form of Parkinsonism and usually occurs in middle-aged adults between the ages of 40 and 60. MSA causes a progressive decline of motor functions due to damage to the brain stem and basal ganglia. Symptoms may include difficulty walking, difficulty swallowing, impaired bladder control, slurred speech, poor balance, coordination problems, and tremors. Over time, cognitive decline may occur as well as breathing problems.
