What is Multiple System Atrophy?

Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a rare, degenerative neurological disorder that affects multiple systems in the body.

It is a form of Parkinsonism and usually occurs in middle-aged adults between the ages of 40 and 60. MSA causes a progressive decline of motor functions due to damage to the brain stem and basal ganglia. Symptoms may include difficulty walking, difficulty swallowing, impaired bladder control, slurred speech, poor balance, coordination problems, and tremors. Over time, cognitive decline may occur as well as breathing problems.

What type of difficulties are faced by patients?

Patients with MSA often face several types of difficulties as they struggle with their condition.

Some common difficulties include physical limitations due to weakened muscles or impaired movement; decreased communication skills due to difficulty speaking or swallowing; poor balance or coordination; loss of bladder control; slowed thinking processes; emotional changes such as depression or anxiety; and increased risk of falls or other injuries due to muscle weakness or impaired physical ability.

Other potential issues include fatigue, sensory disorders like numbness or tingling in different parts of the body, pain, sleep disturbances like insomnia or restless leg syndrome, gastrointestinal issues like constipation and weight loss from anorexia.

What will be Kinsa Care’s approach to Multiple System Atrophy?

Kinsa Care takes an integrated approach to helping those living with MSA by offering comprehensive care services tailored to each patient’s needs. Our team works closely with patients and their families to create individualised care plans that address both physical and psychological challenges associated with this condition.

We focus on maximising quality of life through symptom management using medications when necessary as part of an overall treatment plan which includes lifestyle modifications such as appropriate exercise programs or dietary changes. We also provide education on self-care techniques so that patients can manage their symptoms independently at home when possible. Additionally, we provide emotional support for both patients and caregivers during challenging times throughout the disease process by providing access to counselling services if needed.

Ultimately our goal is to empower our clients living with MSA so that they can maximise independence for as long as possible while maintaining quality of life despite the challenges posed by this condition.
